Journeymans Test Prep

Problem and Solution:

Our technical instructors observed that students and apprentices were not passing their Journeyman's License exam at an acceptable rate. They sought out my expertise as an experienced Learning Experience Designer (LXD) to recreate the testing environment, allowing for effective practice before the actual exam. By utilizing past exam questions and content from the National Electrical Code (NEC) text, I developed a 70-question test with a timer and bookmark options to closely resemble the real exam. Since the implementation of this preparatory test, the pass rate among apprentices has increased by approximately 75%, significantly enhancing their success in becoming licensed electricians.

Process: 

To begin, I requested access to the National Electrical Code (NEC) text, examples of past test questions, and details about the testing environment. After careful consideration, I determined that recreating the testing environment would be the most effective solution to meet the instructors' needs. Through a process of trial and error, I successfully developed a bookmarking system within Storyline that closely mirrored the actual exam. Additionally, upon learning from the instructors that the test is timed, I incorporated a timer into the course to ensure that our apprentices experienced the same pressure they would face during the real exam. I also realized that one test of 70 questions would not cover the breadth of the NEC, therefore wouldn't result in an effective prepatory test. So I decided to create a total of 9 prep tests- each including 70 different questions. In total, covering around 700 unique questions about the NEC.Test results were recorded through the use of Workday, and reported to the instructors as needed.
