Problem and Solution:
The apprentice program manager requested a 12-week curriculum to be distributed before apprentices started the program. The goal was to provide a casual introduction to the program, along with essential information on various topics such as safety tips, health and wellness, and National Electrical Code (NEC) information. The manager emphasized that this information did not need to be tracked, and full courses were to be avoided to prevent overwhelming the apprentices. Considering these requirements, I decided that micro-eLearning modules would be the best approach. I also chose to proceed with the 7taps format for these so that the apprentices, who are already working on active jobsites, would be able to access the content on their mobile phones instead of being required to complete it on a computer. These concise, focused modules ensure that apprentices receive the necessary information without feeling overwhelmed. The micro-eLearnings cover key topics in a digestible format, providing a smooth transition into the more intensive aspects of the program.
Process:
In addition to utilizing micro-eLearnings, we integrated full onboarding courses that regular new hires complete. This ensures that apprentices receive the same foundational information as other employees, promoting consistency and alignment within the company. Furthermore, we developed a new course specifically focused on construction basics, tailored to the needs of apprentices. This course provides a comprehensive overview of essential construction concepts, laying a solid groundwork for their future training. I collaborated with the health and wellness team to create content that includes filmed stretches and other materials designed to keep apprentices' bodies and minds healthy. Additionally, I worked with the safety team to identify and incorporate the most critical safety tips for newcomers to the job site. By implementing this blended approach, we provided apprentices with a well-rounded introduction to the program. The micro-eLearnings offered a manageable entry point, while the full onboarding courses and the new construction basics course ensured comprehensive coverage of essential topics. This strategy balanced accessibility and depth, supporting apprentices' successful integration into the program.
